Charlotte Hornets at Orlando Magic

1Q

Zeller and MKG cutting and slashing to the rim and Orlando not interested in guarding it

0-5 early from 3

Problems defensively

2Q

Bench comes in and starts knocking down 3's to get the lead back

16p for Marco

Problems with Hezonja

ORL ends 2Q on a 12-4 run

Hornets sloppy on offense and defense

3Q

ORL starters playing better than CHA starters. Starts with Elfrid Payton penetration.

Kemba Walker: limping around a bit…shot is way off…can’t do anything with payton

Charlotte Hornets at Indiana Pacers

PREGAME

No Nic Batum (migraine). Had a CT scan which according to Hornets broadcaster Stephanie Ready was precautionary and came out negative...and the team is hoping to get him back soon.

Pacers back to back coming from snow NYC

1Q

Pretty much the opposite start defensively for the Hornets. Pacers 1/7 from 3.

Briante Weber checks in. Aggressive and communicative on defense. Not afraid to take some chances. On offense he was aggressive getting to his midrange game.

Frank Kaminsky clutch play at the end of the 1st to force three FTs.

2Q

2nd unit does a good job creating some offense. Briante-4. Belinelli-6. Frank didn't shoot from outside well but he had it going inside and got to the freethrow line.

Thought Kemba forced some things in the 1st half. No turnovers but telegraphed a few rim runs and had them sent back. Was frustrated at not being able to be more involved in the offense.

Paul George 5/8 for 12p. Getting it going from everywhere and anyhow.

Offense felt the loss of Nic Batum in that first half. A lot fo guys creating for themselves where they would look to Nic Batum to set something up or pull the defense with a drive.

3Q

Paul George opens up the quarter unguardable

Kemba and Co. doing a good job of taking advantage of 1-4 switches when they could get them.

7:30 - Finally get a stop on Paul George and they can't secure the defensive rebound. Pass to the corner for three. Timeout Hornets.

Zeller dives on the floor for a ball, bobbles it out to Marvin who can't get it off the floor. IND ties it up. EMBLEMATIC

Charlotte Hornets vs. Chicago Bulls

1Q

chicago hitting shots.

jeremy lamb hitting shots.

rondo three triples in first 6m

hornets tighten up, Rondo turns it over (hasnt started in a while.)

graham gets Lambs normal minutes. Aggressively attacks the rim and gets fouled.

Hornets bench get sucked into penetration, Chi hitting every open 3

2Q

bulls continue to penetrate and kick for 3

starters come in and lock down defensively

Bulls turn mistakes and turnovers by the Hornets offense into points in transition late in the 2nd

3:00 after timeout, missed Kemba midrange. Nobody tracks butler who gets a lob behind the defense for two. ANTI HORNETS ALERT.

Kemba cold in the first half until he hit two threes to end it and keep the Hornets within reach. NOBODY ELSE WAS.

HALFTIME 58-48

lamb 13-3

marvin 9-11

kemba 10-4a-2r

3Q

robin lopez eliminates a lot of what zeller likes to do offensively. Guards the roll well, physical. Keeps zeller outside the paint.

hornets come out attacking the paint. Mkg like a man possessed. 6 quick points to open the 3rd. Knocks down a midrange jmper to cut it to one.

Lamb: can be deadly attacking the paint esoecially in ISO but still makes very questionable decisions, gets caught in the air. A little too patient taking screens, can take the air out of the ball.

another marvin dunk. If the Hornets are going to miss the playoffs at least theyll entertain us with the juciest yams in the association.

Clifford finally goes with Briante Weber over Brian Roberts

good defense to help on Mirotic, almost gets a strip but doesn't finish his defense and allows mirotic to get an open three and he knocks it down

they run the final play for him and he does a good job of catching his man off guard with his first step before the screen got there. Gets two points.

4Q

Weber: some good some bad, just like I expected...Lots of ball pressure...decent attacker, had some nice finishes.

Starters back in early with the season on the line. Kemba and MKG start getting into that "it's up to us mode"

Dwade in the 4th...again

Butler amazing pass to Mirotic in the corner for another three. Just an absurd display of shot making from someone who has made a season of missing shots.

OREB leads to another mirotic three to put the lead at nine under 3 to play OREB a problem all game

Lamb knocks down a deep three and then next bulls possession bites bad on a Wade fake and fouls him for the second tume this game. Clifford exasperated. Hornets can't get a stop in the 4th.

Charlotte Hornets at Miami Heat

1Q

Kemba scoreless (0-4)

Batum aggressive.

Lamb big lift off the bench.

Another nice high low JOB dropoff pass

2Q

Miami start with an 8-0 run. Hornets fight back.

Miami responds with a barrage of threes led by the Dragic/Waiters combo

Johnny O'Bryant leaves the game with an ankle sprain (does not return)

Hornets counter-counter-counter punch by using aggressive defense to get into quick offense

KEMBA WALKER 17p!!!

54-54

HALFTIME - Kemba said in the 1Q he was shooting to shoot...but in the second he was shooting to MAKE.

Playoff intensity

3Q

Hornets do a great job of denying Whiteside but the Heat weren't looking for him all that much either.

Whiteside only getting touches off OREB

Batum sprains his ankle after stepping on a ref's foot.

4Q

Marvin Williams massive block

Nic Batum returns.

TOO MUCH JOHNSON!! James Johnson a huge factor late.

4:30 bad OREB allowed to Miami

Kemba and Waiters trade ridiculous clutch makes.

1:25 left. James Johnson misses a 3pt. No one blocks out Waiters who brings it back out and goes into classic ISO Waiters mode. Jacks up a terrible three and I looked down at my twitter to type out CLASSIC WAITERS in all caps only to stop halfway through when Miami gets the OREB. Zeller leaves the paint. Batum doesn't chase down the board.

Clifford "It's just inexcusable"

Walker gets the and-1 and then the steal but misses the layup that would have cut it to 2 with :20 to play

would have still had to foul

POSTGAME

"guys off the bench were not up to it defensively"

Charlotte Hornets vs. Indiana Pacers

1Q

8:19 missed Zeller dunk. Injury still bothering him?

6:13 two straight defections MKG Marvin

3:38- Zeller perfectly timed screen to open Nic for three 18-11 CHA. These two just work so well together. Cody is devastating with these offball screens.

JOB 2 nice def poss on Jefferson. Nifty pass to Nic Batum on the DHO Roll.

batum buzzer beater

2Q

Hornets defensive intensity A++. Roberts, Williams and EVEN BELLY with hands up and hearts out on defense. Making life difficult for a lot of the Pacers passes. Forcing nearly everything outside the paint.

6:30 kemba walker killer crossover

JOB uses his wingspan and energy to deny passing lanes

5:30 Kemba dashes in for a OREB and draws the foul. Unbelievable.

HALFTIME: Kemba amazing. Defense more amazing. Neutralized everyone except Paul George. Kept the ball out of the paint. Rebounded well. Neutralized Myles Turner.

3Q

Hornets getting a ton of OREB

Teague taking command and leading IND on a scoring run. Getting by Kemba with ease. He's so quick off the dribble.

pacers finally getting the ball into the paint

KEY PLAY: roberts secon 3 off a great kickout from Bryant who's shot was just off tonight. Stopped the bleeding.

after leading by 21. Enter the 4th with an 8 pt lead

4Q

Belinelli shooting struggles continue

Lamb scoring big crunch time buckets

6:07 KEY PLAY block on PG that goes out of bounds. Had to slow him down and come up with a stop.

Hornets missed a couple wide open threes that could have put it out of reach or swung the momentum too far for the Pacers to recover. Just haven't been able to knock those down this season.

kemba makes it 92-79 on a three. Next possession he attacks immediately and it leads to a defensive scramble and open layup for zeller. Relentless attack. Its what the Hornets are known for when they are at their best. Saw it from the usual suspects but you also saw it from Batum aggressive attacking passing lanes and getting deflection. You saw it from JOB getting his hands up. From Lamb attacking the paint.

PSA never do the wave at a basketball game. DEF never do it during the 4th quarter while your team is shooting freebies.

Charlotte Hornets at Phoenix Suns

PREGAME

Kaminsky gets the start. Zeller still on a "minutes restriction"

Clifford on Booker: complimenting his ability to take you off the dribble

On the rotation: For right now we'll stick with Frank starting. Once Cody gets off the minutes restriction need to get him back on the floor with Kemba and Nic.

  • This is a little ambiguous. Savvy Clifford is the best Clifford.

Frank pregame: "feel more free" playing the five. Mentions being able to roll AND pop.

2-man lineup defensive numbers between Kaminsky and Zeller vs. Williams and Zeller

2-man lineup defensive numbers between Kaminsky and Zeller vs. Williams and Zeller

1Q

9:02 - Hornets working quickly on offense, not allowing Len to get set on defense. One action to get Marvin on the PnP followed by Kemba taking it all the way in transition

8:00 - Marvin again! He's got 8 early points. Suns keep turning it over and the Hornets keep making them pay.

6:45 - Hornets now playing Zeller and Kaminsky. Watch the defensive end. Kaminsky now guarding the Suns 4.

  • 1st possession Zeller contains Len and Frank stays with Dudley. (Turnover)
  • 4:40 Frank misses a box out in transition that leads to a PHX dunk

Booker/Ulis abusing Roberts/Belinelli

Marvin Williams the MVP of the 1Q. 13p 4/6 from the field. Hornets up 32-28.

PHX shoots 57% but turns it over 5 times.

2Q

10:40 - Hornets breaking the lineup and can't stop the Suns from scoring. PHX 14 bench pts already

Ulis' defense is college basketball level intense and his passes are amazing. He's making me curse and I'm not even playing.

8:27 - Hornets offense cools.

Kemba and MKG return and offense immediately returns to form.

  • Ulis immediately gets scorched by Kemba

6:09 - MKG has 5 OREB.

Shooting struggles continue for Batum. 1-7 so far.

Booker and Bledsoe take over. Combine for 12a. **Barbosa 10p (NOT GOOD)**

2Q PHX run has been all about dribble penetration. PHX shoots 68.4% from the field.

1ST HALF Hornets down 61-58

Hornets offense gets off to a hot start on the back of Marvin Williams (13) and Kemba Walker (18-3a) scoring and MKG's OREB (5). The bench struggled to contain the dribble penetration of Ulis in the 1Q. The starters couldn't keep Bledsoe and Booker out of the lane. PHX ends the half with 18 assists...moving the ball extremely well on offense.

If Nic Batum is 3/7 instead of 1/7 the Hornets are up by 2 or 3. If they play defense in the 2Q they are up by 10.

3Q

Nic Batum comes out and immediately hits the and-1.

Kaminsky 7 quick points.

8:35 - Frank gets beasted by Len

  • By product of Frank at the five. The good with the bad.

7:43 - The Hornets aren't stopping the ball at all. Defense shifting around as man and ball move freely around the court. Down 8 points in PHX after a Chriss three.

4Q

Weird play of the game: Frank Kaminsky hits Lamb on the backdoor cut. Exact play that Hawes and Lamb hooked up on so many times. Kaminsky and Hawes were friends. That's like kissing your brother's widow.

Hornets just need a few buckets to hold serve until the closing unit gets in. Belinelli and Roberts can't put it in the cup.

7:30 - Frank Kaminsky shoulder injury. Alan Williams checked him with his chest. Didn't seem to be huge contact. Freak injury. Basketball is cruel.

Picture of the game: MKG breathing heavily on the bench.

  • Hornets got nothing from their bench on either end at the end of a long road trip.
  • End of the game was a sloppy turnover filled missed shot bonanza.

POSTGAME

Clifford told his players: "I didn't see this coming." Mentioned lack of effort, energy and purpose of play.

I'm torn.

  • Obviously they needed this one. Obviously they made some mistakes in the first half.
  • But I don't know how you win a game getting that little from your bench, especially against a young team playing for pride.

It was two different ball games. One where the Suns made mistakes and the Hornets took advantage and another where PHX protected the ball and the Hornets got taken advantage of.

Charlotte Hornets at Detroit Pistons

1Q

Hornets get into the penalty with over 7 to go

Get Drummond and Leuer in foul trouble, enter Boban

Boban goes to work on the O-boards

Hornets 2nd unit defense an absolute sieve.

2Q

Batum in to give them a boost on offense.

Boban gets a double double early in the 2nd 10-10

Drummond gets back again against the bench which is exactly what DET wants

KEMBA draws a 3 point foul to pull within 10

3Q

KEMBA come in and knocks down a three.

Hornets get Drummond in foul trouble

Roy Hibbert dream shake 8:00 STEPBACK 3 look

3:40 Pistons 3. Frank gets knocked off his closeout so easily

4Q

Kemba gets them back in the game after Nic goes down with an injury

Spencer Hawes playing schrodengers basketball can’t tell if he’s keeping the Hornets alive or killing them. Then he hits those huge threes.

Twitter asking why not go with Roy Hibbert in the 4Q when the Hornets?

Last inbounds play. Cool play. Neat play. Bad decision. Quick decision. Only one tick off the five second clock. Kemba’s shot would have been crazy difficult and it may not have gotten off on time but Marco’s had no shot.

Hornets now 3-5 on the SEGABABA….12-4 last season.

POSTGAME: Clifford says that if they want to be the team he knows they can be this is the kind of game they have to win. Losing close games, haven’t won an OT game

He also criticized the bench play. Defensively they just weren’t good enough to compete.

Could it be time to consider lineup changes once Nic and Cody return?

Problem is what do you do? Do you send MKG down and bring Marco up. Now the starting unit has two wings that can’t guard elite players.

If you send Cody down and elevate Roy you miss everything good defensively and offensively he was giving you playing with the best players.
